Our Response to Chunikhel

Chunikhel is a village in Kathmandu District in the Bagmati Zone of central Nepal. We have been supporting Shree Naulin School of Chunikhel  from a long time. Mostly, we organize foster child program for the students so that they can learn more and have further education. Moreover, we run other small programs related to Environment, Nutrition and so on. Meanwhile on April, we were about to organize a program in Shree Naulin Secondary School where volunteer from JAFS where also participating on it but due to the earthquake it was unsuccessful. Although, it was not safe here, but still the volunteersfrom JAFS were brave enough to join the Nepalese in such a difficult time. Many of the houses in Chunikhel were completely destroyed and other houses were not safe to stay. Shree Naulin  School was also cracked a bit.

So, in our immediate response we distributed 30 boxes of noodles and played some games like football, saucer and also distributed 3000kg of rice for total 150 families.

As it was the monsoon season, because of the rain  the TLC got damaged due to which the teachers were not able to run the classes which would effect the student's education. So, along with the volunteer members of AFS - Nepal and the students, we started to renovate it by pouring some sand and putting bricks above it.

After completing the task of TLC, the Japanese volunteer member distributed some balloons, stationery kits and bubble maker to the primary students. The students were so happy to receive the gifts from them.

At the same time, volunteers from JAFS taught about the importance of Recycle and Reuse and also played some games in order divert the mind of the students.

Knowing the conditions of the school i.e. slightly crack on the walls, an engineer from Japan gave the suggestion or showed the methods of how to raise the walls in order to make the building more strong. For which the AFS-Nepal volunteer members and 5 - 6 students also helped in completing it.

Meanwhile in the same time, the Reporter from the well known Japanese Newspaper "Aasai Sinbun" also visited the school and interviewed some of the students and locals residing there about the earthquake and how the life of ones changed after it.  And also provided stationery kits, balloons and slippers to the students.
